Exlosive potos: JoeyB takes home new Hyundai Elantra
Midland Savings and Loans has presented a brand new Hyundai Elantra to Joey B (of Tonga fame), for winning the New Artist of the Year at this year’s Ghana Music Awards.

The car was part of Joey B’s prize package for winning New Artist of the Year at the VGMAs, which came off on May 3rd, 2014 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

A brief ceremony was held at the forecourt of Midland Head Office at East Legon. Present at the ceremony, among others, were the Minister for Tourism, Culture & Creative Arts, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare (Mrs), Musiga President, Obour, Nii Ayite Hammond of Charterhouse, Samini, Tic Tac and MUSIGA Administrator, Daddy Bosco.

Joey B was accompanied by members of his Black Avenue Music management and his family – grandmother, mother and sister.

“Sponsoring the car prize is a token of our love for Ghanaian music; and as part of our corporate social responsibility, we are committed to supporting this industry for a long time to come”, said Mr. Adjovu, who celebrates his birthday today.

Midland Savings & Loans Ltd have been working with the Musicians Union of Ghana on various projects for the past four years.

President Obour, who signed the MOU covering the car hand-over said: “The presentation of the car is to encourage young artistes to be more creative and also make the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards much more competitive thereby improving the general standards of our music”.

In his acceptance speech, Joey B thanked D-Black for putting him in the spotlight and also thanked MUSIGA for the gesture; specifically mentioning President Obour for steering his career with advices. He jokingly called Samini, a prophet, because Samini had told him not long ago, that he would be driving a very good car soon.

He dedicated the car to Castro saying, “I know we will see you again, whenever it will be”.

POLITICS OVER CASTRO's CASE NPP / NDC COMES IN
Bernard Antwi Boasiako
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) have started trading accusations and counter accusations, clearly politicising last Sunday’s tragedy involving hip-life musician Castro and his friend, Janet, who are feared dead after getting missing in the Volta Lake.

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly called Chairman Wontumi, on Thursday publicly accused President Mahama of not doing enough to tell Ghanaians about the whereabouts of the missing duo.

Chairman Wontumi said “the President, John Mahama should have come out to say something to Ghanaians and Castro’s family. Castro has become a national asset and the President should have come out to tell us the whereabouts of Castro and Janet and the outcome of the search. He can even bring in foreign divers to help in the search. His silence is worrying and we are all getting worried.”

The NPP Chairman told OKAY FM in Accra that he was very worried and had not been able to eat a single morsel of food since Sunday when the tragedy occurred.

He added: “Castro is a public figure and I don’t know why the President cannot give the nation some hope or some assurance to calm the several worried Ghanaians… If the Marine Police are working, it does not mean the President should remain silent. If this was in America, Obama would have come out with a statement. I am worried. President Mahama must come out to tell us where Castro is. Castro served Ghana and this tragedy happened to him, I have not eaten because Castro is part of the persons who entertain the several millions of Ghanaians.”

Responding on behalf of the NDC, a spokesperson of Dr. Kwabena Adjei, the party’s National Chairman, expressed disappointment at Chairman Wontumi and accused him of politicising a tragic development to score political points.

“The President cannot jump in the Volta Lake to start searching for Castro himself. All he can do is to direct the institutions of state to do all within their means to address the situation. The Greater Accra Regional Minister has moved to Ada to join in the search, the Ghana Navy is involved in the search, the Ghana Marine Police is involved, the Ada District and Municipal Assembly is involved, we have military boats involved, and helicopters flying day and night in this search so if someone says the President has not spoken about it, the person is just being mischievous,” the spokesperson, who gave his name as Mustapha, stated.

Mustapha noted further: “I am greatly disappointed in the NPP Chairman and he should replay what he has just said and listen to his own voice. I am sure his followers would even tell him he is wrong….If at this stage of our economic dispensation, we still have leading politicians politicising such issues of emotions and tragedy, then we should be disappointed.

“What else does Chairman Wontumi want the President to do about it? I have always said that some persons in the NPP are defiling the status quo of our political landscape. They play politics with everything and this is not exciting Ghanaians. It is not everything we should play politics with. It is not everything that the President as a person must make a statement on,” Mustapha concluded.

Meanwhile the search for Castro and Jane continue unabated though it has not proved fruitful so far.

Man murders grandma for being a "witch"
Patrick Nuamah
Residents of Ndusuazo, near Half Assini, in the Jomoro District in the Western Region, were greeted with a horrifying scene on Wednesday afternoon when a man strangled his 70-year-old grandmother.

That was after he had accused the woman, Madam Enam Manya of witchcraft, which, he said, she had used to prevent a family member from being selected to join the national team, the Black Stars.

The suspect, Patrick Nuamah, 38, a cargo truck driver, said owing to his grandmother’s witchcraft, his cousin, who was very good at football, was not able to make it to the World Cup.

The police said Nuamah accused the grandmother of bewitching his cousin whose name he gave as Annor Nwonzu, making him lose all his skills in football, for which reason his grandma did not deserve to live.

Family woes
The police added that the Nuamah also accused his grandmother of being the main cause of all their woes and that if his cousin had been able to maintain his football skills, he would have been one of the Black Star players selected for the World Cup and that would have improved the economic well-being of the family.

According to the District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr John F. Dzineku, when the police got to the scene, suspect Nuamah had bolted.

Eye witness
He said an eye witness in the house told the police that Madam Manya came to her in tears claiming that her grandson had entered her room and used a broom to beat her.

Realizing the distress and sad looking posture of the old lady, she comforted her and asked her to either go back and take a rest or wait in her house while she (the eyewitness) reported the incident to the family head.

Grandma Manya chose to go home and take a rest while the eyewitness reported the issue to the family head.

According to the district commander, on hearing the report, some senior members of the family proceeded to the old lady’s house to console and to assure her of their support.

“But before they could get to her house, Nuamah had already strangled his grandmother and left the scene,” he said.

‘Dead’ man appears at family gathering

Family members and friends who had gathered to mourn the death of their beloved took to their heels when the man who was supposed to be dead showed up.

On Sunday, July 6, 2014, Mr Isaac Asante arrived home from work to find a crowd in mourning cloths in his house.

A canopy had been erected, while dirges were being sung on mounted loud speakers, but as soon as some members of his family spotted him, they ran helter skelter.

A surprised Mr Asante tried to find out why they were running from him but no one would stop to answer him.
A call from the police

After a while, one of the family members who had mustered courage told Mr Asante that he was supposed to have been knocked down and killed by a vehicle and that they had gathered to mourn him.

The family member explained that one of Mr Asante’s sisters had received a call, and although the number on the phone showed that the call was from Mr Asante, the caller identified himself as a policeman.

The policeman was said to have enquired from the recipient of the call whether she knew the owner of the number that had called her, to which she answered in the affirmative.

She was then directed to report at the Odorkor Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) for a piece of information.

At the station, the sister, who showed up with some family members, was told that the owner of the phone had died instantly on Saturday, July 5, 2014 after he had been knocked down by a vehicle at Bubuashie in Accra.

The police informed the family that the body had been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue and invited them to the morgue to identify it the next day.
News Spread

However, before the family could identify the body, news spread that Mr Asante had died, leading to the gathering of mourners in his house.

After hearing the reason for the gathering, Mr Asante told the few family members who had returned that his phone had been snatched from him while he was on his way to work the previous day.

He explained that he had returned home a day after the incident because he had worked on the night shift.
Phone thief

The Odorkor Police Commander of the MTTD, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr Abdullah Mumuni, confirmed the incident and said a man had been knocked down by a commercial vehicle, with registration number GW 9888-13.

The driver of the vehicle, Mr Benjamin Duku, had told the police, who had rushed to the scene, that the victim was making a phone call while crossing the street.

Since the victim died instantly and there was no form of identification on him, the police decided to call the contacts on the Nokia phone which was found not far from where he had fallen.

Later, Mr Asante identified the body of the victim in the morgue as the man who had snatched his phone.

Meanwhile, the phone snatcher is yet to be identified, as the police were yet to receive any report of a missing person from relations of the victim.

2014 Has Been Positive For Dancehall -Jupiter

Dancehall artiste Jupiter says 2014 has really been a positive year for most members of the Dancehall fraternity.

The ‘Money Box’ hit maker was nominated for the Dancehall Artiste of the Year, Dancehall Song of the Year, Best Collaboration of the Year (Dancehall), Music Video of the Year (Dancehall) and Best Performer of the Year categories in the second edition of the BASS Awards.

“This year has really been a great year for the Dancehall artistes. Personally as a Dancehall artiste, three years ago I wasn’t actually having platforms like the VGMAs and other platforms we have here in Ghana to perform. This year has really been a positive year for every Dancehall artiste, I mean the reigning ones,” Jupiter told NEWS-ONE.

Born Michael Okine, Jupiter stated that in the past Dancehall artistes could not make it at most of the popular events in Ghana because of the genre of music they were doing.

“In the past I found it really difficult to be on those platforms because of the kind of music I’m doing which is Dancehall. Last year and this year, I’m not bragging, but I have been on every show and gained a bit of money so I guess it’s really been a good year. Every Dancehall artiste who actually did well also enjoyed the same way I enjoyed,” he added.

Perhaps the year under review has really heightened the interest of Ghanaians in the genre with Shatta Wale winning the Ultimate Artiste of the Year award at the just ended Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

Asamoah Gyan releases statement prays for Castros return

Black Stars Captain, Asamoah Gyan and his elder brother, Baffour Gyan, have released a statement on the suspected drowning of hiplife artiste, Castro, and Jane Bandu in the Ada estuary on Sunday.

In the statement dated July 8, 2014 and signed by their Spokesman and Business Development Manager, Sammy Anim Addo, the Gyan brothers confirmed that Castro and Janet were indeed missing.

They said efforts were underway to locate them, and called on people who have information that can assist the search to make them available.

Expressing hope that the duo will found alive, the brothers said, “Our prayers and support lie firmly with Castro and Miss Jane Bandu and their families. We pray for strength and fortitude for all engaged in the search.”

Read the full statement below:
“On Sunday 6 July 2014 we were on holiday in the company of friends and a few acquaintances on the banks of the Volta River, shuttling between Peace Holiday Resort and Aqua Safari Resort at Ada when we noticed that our close friend and popular musician, Castro (known in private life as Theophilus Tagoe) had gone missing on the Volta River together with an acquaintance, Miss Jane Bandu, who had apparently hitched a ride with Castro on a jet ski rented by Castro.

We have made and we continue to make every effort to find them. Several state institutions and officials have been involved in the search, including the Marine Police, the Navy, the Tema Police Command, the Ada Police Command, Ada East District Assembly, local fishermen at Ada and some traditionalists.

The jet ski on which Castro and Miss Jane Bandu rode has been retrieved. However, the two are yet to be found. We are keeping hope alive that the two will eventually be found.

Our prayers and support lie firmly with Castro and Miss Jane Bandu and their families. We pray for strength and fortitude for all engaged in the search. And we also call on anyone who has useful information to assist in this quest. God bless us all.

IWAN Pulls Out of BASS Awards - blissgh

Information reaching NEWS-ONE indicates that Ghanaian Reggae artiste IWAN and his management have pulled out of this year’s edition of the BASS Awards.

The Reggae act had earlier written to the BASS Award board seeking clarifications on why his ‘Face of Jah’ was not nominated for the ‘Best Song Writer’ category.

According to IWAN, the board’s deliberate attempt to ignore his letter is what resulted in him pulling out of the event.

“I wrote to the board of the BASS Awards like a month ago to tell them that I have pulled out of the event unless they come out to explain to me why I was not placed in that ‘Best Song Writer’ category. Till date I haven’t received any explanation, which also means that I have pulled out of the event,” IWAN confirmed to NEWS-ONE.

Since the release of the BASS Awards nomination list, like IWAN, certain Reggae and Dancehall artistes have registered their displeasure about some categories, but organisers of the event say there are certain requirements that works submitted by these artistes are supposed to meet before they qualify to be placed in any category.

“For me I just told them that I’m pulling out and that is my last action. It has been a month and some weeks now, these people have ignored me like nothing is going on. This is clean sabotage. All I want them to do is to come out and tell the people that this is why I was not included in that category, that is the way forward. I’m not fighting for any award. They have to just come out, issue a statement or something and explain to us then people will know that what I am fighting for is relevant but they have ignored me as if to say what I’m saying is not important,” he added.

The BASS Awards, which is scheduled for August 30, is designed to award Reggae and Dancehall artistes. The event is jointly organized by Rackus Productions, Bull Haus Entertainment and Solid Multimedia.

Janet Badu castro's alleged girlfriend identified - blissghThe lady suspected to have drowned along with hiplife artiste, Theophilus Tagoe aka Castro in a sea scooter accident at Ada has been identified as 24-year-old Janet Bandu.

Janet is a student at the Mayfair Design School at Cantonments in Accra where she is pursuing a course in fashion and design.

She also featured in a reality TV show dubbed “I’m In Love with Bomaye” on Multi-TV in 2012.

Her father, Staff Sergeant Joe Bandu (retd.) told Asempa FM on Monday that his daughter schooled at Kasoa in the Central region before continuing at Mayfair Design School.

He said the family lives at Kasoa and knew Janet was in school until Sunday when they heard of the incident.

The ex-service man said he had just returned from northern Ghana after attending the funeral of a brother.

He claimed to be hearing conflicting information regarding the daughter about the incident and has since dispatched Janet’s brother to Ada to be able to gather information on what exactly happened.

An uncle of Janet who also spoke to the radio station appealed to the public to dispel negative reports about their daughter that nobody knew where she hailed from.

He said the family was depressed and finding it difficult to entertain such rumours about their daughter.

Castro and Janet were said to have taken one of the sea scooter (Jet ski ) out on a cruise on the Volta Lake when the accident occurred.

Sources said Castro and Janet suffered the accident on the Volta Lake while on a weekend getaway with Black Stars’ striker, Asamoah Gyan who had taken his friends on a boat cruise in Ada.

Gyan is said to usually rent a yacht to entertain close family members and friends whenever he is in town for holidays but the said yacht was unavailable this time around, as it had been sent out for repairs.

The police are searching for the bodies. Their sea scooter has been recovered by police.

Friends have taken to social media to pay tribute to Castro, despite his death not being officially confirmed.

Ever since D-Black started his music career, most of his hit songs have been collaborations with other musicians and now some music enthusiasts are seeing him as someone who cannot come out with a ‘banger’ on his own.

Others are even branding him as an opportunist who takes advantage of already established artistes to enhance his works to churn out hit songs.

Some of his hit collaborations include Somebody ft Kwabena Kwabena, I like That ft Sarkodie, Carry Go ft Davido, Vera Ft Joey B, Conference Call ft. Kwaw Kese and Personal Person ft Castro.

However, D-Black who debunks this perception believes he can stand on his own without the support of his other colleague musicians.

He told Showbiz “I collaborate with other musicians because they are different in their own ways. It is ridiculous for anyone to say I am an opportunist because my fan base is beyond Ghana”.

D-Black explained that because he is not fluent in Twi and Ga, he goes in for artistes who speak those languages well to help get his message across.

“If I could sing in Twi or Ga, I wouldn’t have to feature others on my songs most of the time. That is not say I wouldn’t have done collaboration even if I were fluent in Twi or Ga. I cannot sing Twi or Ga that is why I always feature other musicians”

D-Black who has topped several charts in Ghana with his current song Personal Person is about releasing a gospel song titled Son of God which features Bisa Kdei.

Son of God was produced by DJ Breezy of Personal Person, Selfie, Sei Ho and Tonga fame.

In Son of God, D-Black praised God for the success he has achieved with his music career. He also used the song to encourage people going through difficulties to have faith in God because He is the only one who never disappoints.

Son of God is D-Black’s second single gospel song. The first one was Somebody which featured Kwabena Kwabena.

“Son of God is an inspirational song and I hope it improves the lives of those who listen to it. I hardly do gospel music but looking at what God has done for me throughout my music career, I believe it is right for me to do a song to glorify His name and to encourage others to do same” he said.
